Equality or Equity?🤔

Reading through some articles just brings back school memories. We were taught to create equal opportunities and fairness for all.

I was thinking to myself and reading, what exactly is the definition of being equal or fair? Is this giving everyone the same opportunity or service? Or rather, it is recognizing everyone's uniqueness, strength and limitations. Giving everyone options that suit and address their needs. Providing that user-centric product that then creates that peculiar user experience.

This cuts across all sectors. These options wouldn’t only suit their needs.

It recognises the uniqueness in the gift of humans that makes the world Beautiful. That we are and could be at different levels. Focusing on rather providing solutions for all, It provides solutions that address us in those unique levels of needs without making the other feel less or seeing the next person to be better off.

All options provided brings us to the same level, creating the same opportunity yet recognising our uniqueness.

EQUALITY: is providing or creating solutions (digital or physical) for everyone to use.

EQUITY: is developing solutions (digital or physical) for all to use and recognising that society is made up of individuals with cognitive or physical challenges like blindness, dementia, wheelchair users, etc and including their accessibility and use of these solutions.

A quote from; Naheed Dosani @NaheedD

“Equality is giving everyone a shoe. Equity is giving everyone a shoe that fits”.

So when creating that innovative artificial intelligence solution, model, or product, make sure to double-check you are creating with diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion in mind.

The University of Maine’s Rising Tide Center uploaded by Susan K. Gardner and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0N22PMdF1U. I found these videos very insightful watching.

I quote: “Equity is a process. It is continuous. It requires power, resources, and social responsibility to change the structures.”

It is recognizing everyone at every level, regardless of being at different levels.

“WE is always stronger than ME”!
